Grum: mini interview

It seems like Leeds-based producer Grum is on a bit of a roll at the moment, with recent remixes for Fenech Soler, Pearl & The Puppets & Everything Everything, the release of his critically acclaimed debut album 'Heartbeats' & an extensive tour around the world this has truly been a summer to remember. And last week he stopped by Killer Kitsch to bring his own brand of energy-driven, 'power disco' to the Buff Club with devastating results.

Once again, Killer Kitsch was jam-packed and I can't speak highly enough of their consistency throughout the summer and the guests they're bringing in. Look out for an exclusive Scottish performance from Moda mega-talent, Tom Staar on the 7th of September. Anyway, before Grum took to the decks I managed to sneak a quick four minute interview with him which you can listen to here:

Mega tunage....

Ok, so last week I had the pleasure of supporting Grum at Killer Kitsch and we had a good chat about some of his latest remixes. I identified this as my most recent favourite, a lovely 80's inspired disco dub of Scottish native Pearl & The Puppets. Much like his remix of Lady Ga Ga he's elevated the vocals far beyond the relative safety of the original soundscape...

Pearl & The Puppets - Make Me Smile (Grum Remix)

2010 was the summer dubstep went pop and while the purists may see this as the death of the genre's underground roots I think the exposure it's created can only be a good thing. After Magnetic Man's top 10 smash, Katy B's Benga produced 'On A Mission...' I think Dansette Junior's 'Paranoid' could be the next crossover. Produced by Drumsound & Bassline Smith, this gets a release on August 30th...

Up next...it's all about a return to form for LA Riots. I've found the whole electro house sound getting a bit stale recently but every so often something crops up which has a certain quality that makes it stand out. Here we have LA Riots remixing Ciara with a rising dub of her new single 'Ride'. Pitty Ciara is spouting shit all over it though.

Ciara - Ride (LA Riots Remix)

You can always trust Riva Starr to beef something up a bit for the dancefloor, without doubt the hottest name in house music at the moment this is his tribal inspired remix of Adam Port & Sante's 'Own'. Continuing with the current trend of drums, percussion & bassline he takes the 10min original & injects it with added funk...

BLOG BURNER:

It's been a while since we put the spotlight on a no-nonsense slice of bass heavy dancefloor devastation so here is the latest offering from Sound Pellegrino. Taken from the forthcoming 'Staright From The Spring EP' this is a heads down, bass curdling stomper from Bart B More & Harvard Bass which is sure to go off at peak time...

CREAMFIELDS!!

WOW, so much to catch up on! The last week of my life has been a bit of a blur, after the madness of Doppelganger on Saturday (which I'm still recovering from) it's all just melted into music, late nights & sleeping. I was however awoken on Monday with the incredible news that I'd somehow managed to win the Mixmag/Creamfields 2010 DJ competition which is obviously just amazing! The prize is a money-can't-buy DJ slot at the festival, so I get to drop the first beat of the entire weekend. Suggestions welcome...

I'll be opening the Mixmag arena on the Saturday with a set from 3-4. So if your going, come down and get you rave on early! Massive thanks to MIXMAG for making this happen and also to the guys at Cream. This is without doubt the biggest dance festival in the world and they have the line up to prove it.

Here is the winning mix, starting with a disco house explosion with His Majesty Andre and Armand Van Helden's classic 'You Don't Know Me', before moving through some pulsing house with Round Table Knights & Supabeatz. The climax comes with a 'rave to the grave' mini-mash up...lets av' it!

1. His Majesty Andre - Cyprus
2. Armand Van Helden - You Don't Know Me
3. Phonat - Set Me Free (Louis La Roche Remix)
4. Round Table Knights - Stomper
5. The 2 Bears - Mercy Me (Supabeatz Remix)
6. Drop The Lime - Sex Sax
7. Wiley - Electric Boogaloo (Riva Starr Remix)
8. Redlight - Feels So Good
9. Zinc - Old Flame
10. Herve - Blaze It
11. The Prodigy - Voodoo People
12. Skream - Burnin' Up

Every so often we like putting the spotlight on some of Glasgow's many uber-talented local producers, even if one person takes an interest in their then it all helps, which is why it's so encouraging to finally have a compilation which brings it altogether. Physical copies will be available at selected events (which I'll keep you posted about) but you can download the collection for free as a ZIP file below...

Doppelganger...

So tonight I get to indulge in my favourite night of radio output of the year...Radio 1 in Ibiza. I'm off to the island in little over a week so I'm definitely expecting this to get me right in the mood. If only the weather could man up and provide some sunshine! Thankfully what we have planned for tomorrow doesn't depend on the weather but carries the Ibiza spirit regardless...

DOPPELGANGER: An all day party held in the basement of Capitol for absolutely nothing!

We've convinced some of the finest DJ's and club nights Glasgow has to offer to get out of their Saturday afternoon scratcher and roll down to Capitol at midday for a full 12 hours of raving (and possibly beyond)...and it's all bloody free! So if your strolling about Glasgow city centre tomorrow and you feel an urge to to get a cheeky half-hour mash up in you know where to go! Similarily if your after a good pre-party to your night out get involved! Here is the line up:

Back in the game...

So it's been a while since my last post...too many late nights recently have turned me into a hungover shadow of my former self. With Spectrum last Saturday & Grum at Killer Kitsch on Tuesday night its all been a bit of a blur. Expect full reports on both in the coming days. But right now, it's time for the weekly blast of hot new tunes, starting with two monsters from Skream...

So, dubstep has finally made it into the top 10, and about time to. Magnetic Man's summer anthem 'I Need Air' charted at number 10 and as a thanks to all the loyal fans who actually went and bought it Skream has released the devastating 'Raw Dogz' for free download, watch out for the drop:

Skream - Raw Dogz

Skream also releases his much anticipated new album 'Outside The Box' on Monday. Tracks like 'Listening To The Records...' have already pretty much sound-tracked my summer, bringing back that 90's rave vibe with incredible execution. My favourite track however has to be the vocodered 'Where You Should Be', a love song for the sub bass generation..

Skream - Where You Should Be

One of my favourite live acts I've witnessed this summer has to be Chase & Status, their live show is now a fully accomplished rendition of their music and brings so much energy to the stage. With a new album scheduled for release in early September, their own label MTA putting out nothing but quality & production duties for mega stars the lads are on the verge of going stratospheric. Here is the VIP version of their new single 'Let You Go':

Chase & Status - Let You Go (VIP Mix)

This week's hottest however and claiming the prestigious title of official 'Blog Burner' is a mix by Hot City on Robyn's new single 'Hang With Me'. Bringing back elements of garage and rave and fusing it with techno and electro creates a sound which translates as utter filth on the dancefloor. Their last single 'Another Girl' is one of my tunes of the summer and this new remix is coming on just as hot:

Robyn - Hang With Me (Hot City Remix)

Catch the boys supporting Toddla T at the Sub Club for Mixed Bizness on the 24th of September.
